A clear moonlit night it was. Not a cloud in the sky, not a breeze to shiver from. Just the shadows of the moon and the street lamps to keep a man company. No snow fell from above, but it stood clear and untouched on the path ahead, the machines yet to come through and shovel it aside.
A trail of snaking smoke rose from a lit cigarette. Twice as visable in the cold night then during warm days of summer or fall. Small flakes of ash floated to the snow as a man flicked the tip of the paper roll. He eyed the sign upon the door of the bar that clearly stated, in bold, black letters against white:
'NO SMOKING!'
With a sigh the man retreated beside the door, eager to finish his cigarette before wasting away the rest of the night back at his house, a lovely woman beside him. He cared not for the nasty animal blood. It wasn't actually as bad as he often exagurated it to be, but he much prefered live prey. He had the looks to get what he wanted, why not use them in their benefitial way. A group of younge woman, humans, probably no older then 25, walked past his line of sight. He watched them and vice-versa. He didn't move, but did let a small stream of smoke escape his mouth. They giggled as they disappeared around the building corner. Demetri was almost tempted to follow, but decided against it. A group of girls rather then one alone was just too much. He wanted a meal, not rape-by-woman.
Taping the cig. one last time, he took a final puff before letting it fall onto the sidewalk. He blew the last traces of smoke from his lungs before pushing himself from the brick wall and turning towards the door. The bell rang above the door signaling his entrance. He didn't glance around, but instead went to the front counter. Leaning his elbow against it's wood finished top, he ordered a beer. He didn't need to look to know there was someone watching him, he could feel their eyes upon his back.
As the small, chubby male set the cool beer on the counter, Demetri dropped a five by the man's hand.
"Keep the change." he mumbled. He carried no change, nor any ones. In fact, he rarely carried any money on him. Guess tonight was a special occasion. He had kept his head down slightly as he spoke so that if the bar tender did happen to catch a glipse of Demetri's teeth, it would be hard to notice the unnaturally long canines that just didn't quite fit in the catagory of 'normal humans'.
He took a seat at a lone table in the back of the bar, his face slightly hidden in the shadow, the lights from the ceiling not quite reaching him. He drank his beer slowly, enjoying it. He'd wait a good half hour before searching for a meal, usually they came to him if he was patient.
There were a few silent hearts in this bar tonight, apparently he's not the only one out late looking for a meal. Leaning further back in his seat, Demetri made himself a bit more comfortable. The music playing was a bit painful on his sensitive ears, but by now he was used to it.
